Espoo and the whole Uusimaa region count with strengths such as a diverse and international business arena, strong network for partnerships, and strong research and development scene. The project will create the preconditions for sustainable growth in different city districts: Otaniemi and Keilaniemi will become unique research and development environments where smart poles technology is capitalized for new energy and mobility solutions; Kera will grow into an internationally known area for its smart and clean built environment, and Kiviruukki will become an agile platform for the implementation of a food system and circular economy. The action points are developed in collaboration with the City of Espoo, VTT, Aalto University, Omnia, as well as new business partners and other actors. The project action points are divided in the following working packages: 1. Management and impact 2. Smart and clean city 3. Digitalization opportunities 4. Clean tech demonstrations 5. Energy transition and electrification of transport 6. Sustainable public procurement, citizen engagement and communications The action points detailed in the working packages will have a short-, medium- and long-term impact on both carbon neutrality and the economy. The project will implement promptly deployable solutions as well as enable conditions for the future creation of jobs and competitivity. The impact on the competitive advantage and sustainability of businesses and research will be evaluated from the economic, ecological, and sociocultural viewpoints. During the project, a comprehensive framework for monitoring the impact of the environments will be created, together with concrete KPIs. Collaborative learning and development are essential for co-creating new solutions with all stakeholders. Through this project a great number of actions will be activated and carried out. With communication both to stakeholders and in collaboration with them, the importance of sustainable growth and sustainable lifestyle will be strengthened. The objective is to accelerate the transition towards the use of green and digital solutions in daily life. At the same time, this generates more demand and therefore sets the direction for future continuation work. Marketing and communications support the transition and demonstrate the direction through examples. The project will also bring clearer visibility on what can be the role of cities, research institutes, universities, companies, and citizens in the solutions towards a green transition and climate change mitigation.Project follows the horizontal principles (equality for all genders and ecologically, economically, socially and culturally sustainable development) by taking into account the special needs of different groups of people. New jobs is an important goal in the project and that beneficial to all society. New solutions developed inthe project will be targeted to all genders. In addition, different user groups will be taken into account in the designing and planning, marketing and communication of the solutions being developed.

Already in 2016, the City of Espoo and the Espoo-based energy company Fortum committed to making the district heating system in Espoo, Kauniainen and Kirkkonummi fully carbon neutral. As a member city of the UN’s sustainable development leadership programme, Espoo has committed to developing solutions that support carbon-neutral urban life. Carbon-neutral district heating is a major climate action for the city, as the majority of the emissions of Espoo are generated from heating. Espoo’s and Fortum’s development work was accelerated in autumn 2019 by setting a new interim target to discontinue the use of coal in 2025. The 2020s carbon neutrality project is known as Espoo Clean Heat.
