15730173645KwaDukuzaSouth AfricaAfrica0.1Please give a general description and introduction to your city including your city’s reporting boundary in the table below.2Description of city1Please completeThe KwaDukuza Local Municipality is located within the iLembe District in the KwaZulu-Natal Province. It stretches from the Zinkwazi River in the north to the Tongaat River in the south. It is one of the four municipalities that make up the district. KwaDukuza (previously Stanger) is the district node and dominant commercial centre in the iLembe District. The name KwaDukuza epitomizes the historical background of the area being the home to King Shaka Gravesite and Memorial. The town KwaDukuza is built on the original site of King Shaka’s Royal settlement called Dukuza. The KwaDukuza museum is situated opposite the site of King Shaka Memorial and is dedicated to the sugar industry, the cultural heritage of the early settlers of the town Stanger. The KwaDukuza Municipality occupies a coastal and inland stretch of approximately 50km in length and 14km in width, with a variety of clustered and ad hoc settlements and small towns. KwaDukuza functions as the district node and dominant commercial centre in the ILembe District. The key feature of KwaDukuza is the N2 Development Corridor that runs through it. Historically, the land of the KwaDukuza municipality would to a large degree have been covered by a mosaic of large areas of coastal belt grassland, interrupted by forest patches (particularly on the south facing slopes), wetlands and riverine vegetation. Currently, the land cover of the municipality is overwhelmingly dominated by the cultivation of sugar cane. KwaDukuza has a subtropical climate with summer rains.
