Se ubica al noreste de Colombia, en la ribera del río Sinú, por lo cual se la conoce como La Perla del Sinú. La ciudad se ha desarrollado alrededor de un núcleo urbano, rodeado de pueblos rurales y suelos agrícolas y pastizales. Fundada en 1777, limita hacia el norte con Cereté, Puerto Escondido y San Pelayo; hacia el sur con Tierralta y Valencia; hacia el este con San Carlos y Planeta Rica, y hacia el oeste con el departamento de Antioquia. Dentro de su núcleo urbano, hay 9 comunas principales, que se componen de 207 barrios . Al desarrollarse en el valle del río Sinú, la ciudad exhibe un terreno muy plano (elevación de 18 msnm), con excepción de la baja serranía de Las Palomas, ubicada hacia el sureste de la ciudad. Debido a su relación geográfica con el río, la composición geológica es mayormente roca de sedimentación y es parte de las formaciones geológicas de San Cayetano Inferior, San Cayetano Superior, La Tampa y Ciénaga de Oro (POT 2002-2015). Como resultado de esto, los tres elementos predominantes del paisaje son: colinas estructurales denudativas, superficie de aplanamiento y llanura aluvial (POT 2002-2015).

Contribuir a la reducción de las emisiones de CO2eq en el transporte en un 5%. La reducción se ha logrado a través de la elaboración del plan maestro de ciclorutas, para articular las ciclorutas que estimulen el uso de la bicicleta como medio de transporte alternativo e incremente y mejore la movilidad y accesibilidad urbana. Incrementando y merorando la movilidad y accesibilidad urbana de una manera sostenible e integrada al Sistema Estratégico de Transporte Público (SETP).2. Reducir los consumos de electricidad en las instalaciones municipales en un 15%, de manera que se contribuya a reducir las emisiones de CO2eq asociadas en igual proporción .3. Sustituir el 100% de las bombillas del alumbrado público, con lo cual sedisminuirán en un 5% las emisiones de CO2eq provenientes de este.4. Lograr la eficiencia en la iluminación de las instalaciones privadas, de modo que se contribuya a la reducción del consumo de electricidad en el municipio de Montería en un 15%.5.Contribuir a disminuir en un 15% las emisiones de CO2eq asociadas al consumo de electricidad.6. Instalar paneles fotovoltaicos en cinco instituciones educativas de la ciudad de Montería, lo cual permitirá disminuir el consumo anual de electricidad en 240.000 KWh y reducir en 25.680 toneladas de CO2eq las emisiones anuales asociadas de Gases Efecto Invernadero.7. Evitar la emisión anual de 39.000 ton de CO2eq procedentes de los residuos sólidos en el relleno sanitario de Montería.8. Implantar en el medio plazo un sistema primario de separación y reciclaje de los residuos sólidos urbanos.9. Alcanzar un 20% de reciclaje de los residuos sólidos generados en la ciudad.10. Disminuir un 10% la tasa de generación per cápita de residuos.11. Aumentar la cobertura del alcantarillado sanitario en la zona urbana, lo cual permitirá reducir en un 7% las emisiones de metano (CH4)durante el mismo período.12. Aumentar la cobertura del agua potable en la zona rural al 80% al año 2023.

Frente a la implementación de medidas de eficiencia energética en instalaciones del municipio, a la sustitución de bombillas en el alumbrado público se ha reemplazo por bombillas LED, este cambio ha disminuido un 40% el consumo de energía público de dichas bombillas.2. Institución Educativa de Martinica: desde marzo del año 2015, se convirtió en la primera del país en contar con un sistema autónomo de energía solar que le permitirá abastecerse a cero costosla ciudad cuenta actualmente con cuatro (4) semáforos con sistema autónomo de energía solar. Finalmente, en la Institución Educativa Juan XXIII, durante el año 2020 se realizó las adecuaciones para la implementación de un sistema autónomo de energía solar constituyéndose el primer Colegio verde a nivel nacional, que opera con energías renovables. 3. Actualmente el municipio en el área urbana cuenta con una cobertura de acueducto del 97,32%; el 81,62% para alcantarillado y 95,76% en recolección de basuras.4.El municipio ha venido desarrollando actividades con empresas públicas y privadas en el marco de subprogramas de responsabilidad social empresarial ambiental, tales como limpieza de puntos críticos de residuos sólidos, donación y siembra de árboles, educación ambiental, al igual que varias empresas han reemplazado su iluminación por bombillas LED ahorradoras, campañas de reducción de agua y energía, y captación y aprovechamiento de aguas lluvias.5. Plan Maestro de parques es una acción que propende por la construcción y recuperación de parques urbanos, convirtiéndolos en zonas destinadas a actividades recreativas y deportivas, generando espacios con una calidad urbana y paisajística que despierten en la mayoría de los ciudadanos sentido de pertenencia y amor por la ciudad. Actualmente el municipio de Montería pasó a tener 3,1 m2 de espacio público efectivo por habitante.6. La acción definida en este reto estaba orientada al programa de reforestación un millón de árboles, y en plan de desarrollo Gobierno de la Gente 2020-2023 se incluyó la siembra de 250.000 árboles buscando aumentar la fertilidad y estabilidad del suelo, regular el clima y reducir la erosión hidráulica de las laderas del Rio Sinú.
