In 2016, cities reported over 2,000 climate hazards that are impacting their cities. Globally, cities are reporting that health and community will be most impacted by climate change.

In 2017, Over 120 cities used the Global Protocol for Community-Scale Greenhouse Gas Emission Inventories (GPC) methodology to calculate their emissions. This is a 70% increase on the previous year. Explore cities emissions inventory data to better understand what cities are managing.

All data included in the dataset is self reported by cities through the 2022 Cities Questionnaire. Please note that the reporting platform remains open for submissions until the end of the year and the dataset is updated daily to reflect new submissions. Through our investor initiative we target the largest listed companies in the world, as determined by market capitalization, in sectors for which water is a material issue. We currently cover the Global 500, S&P 500 and FTSE 100 indices as well as the largest companies in Australia, Japan and South Africa.

Water is also incorporated into CDP’s supply chain program. In this initiative, large multinational companies (our Supply Chain Members) issue CDP’s water questionnaire to a number of their suppliers. This exercise allows companies to investigate the water risk in their supply chain and gather vital information about water use outside their direct operations.

This year, we have invited approximately 2,300 companies to respond to CDP’s water questionnaire through our investor and supply chain initiatives. This data set excludes private responders.
