Through our investor initiative we target the largest listed companies in the world, as determined by market capitalization, in sectors for which water is a material issue. We currently cover the Global 500, S&P 500 and FTSE 100 indices as well as the largest companies in Australia, Japan and South Africa.

Water is also incorporated into CDP’s supply chain program. In this initiative, large multinational companies (our Supply Chain Members) issue CDP’s water questionnaire to a number of their suppliers. This exercise allows companies to investigate the water risk in their supply chain and gather vital information about water use outside their direct operations.

This year, we have invited approximately 2,300 companies to respond to CDP’s water questionnaire through our investor and supply chain initiatives. This data set excludes private responders.

This dataset contains 2023 data on cities' collaboration with government, business and civil society on climate-related issues. All data was self reported by cities through CDP-ICLEI Track in 2023 in response to Cities questionnaire question 0.5 on Collaborative Actions. State and regional government climate data is fundamental to delivering the Paris Agreement. Using the data that states and regions disclosed to CDP, we estimate that those that disclosed both a region-wide GHG emissions reduction target and a GHG inventory, are on course to meet the objectives of the Paris Agreement by 2020.
We incorporated the 2017 International Energy Agency scenarios to explore how collective emissions of states and regions change over time. This shows that disclosing states and regions are on average setting more ambitious targets than those set by their national counterparts. This demonstrates that present 2020 targets are sufficient to put states and regions on a trajectory for a 2 degree Celsius world. However, their long-term targets while more ambitious than their national counterparts, are not sufficient to keep the world below a 2 degree rise after 2020.
