Through our investor initiative we target the largest listed companies in the world, as determined by market capitalization, in sectors for which water is a material issue. We currently cover the Global 500, S&P 500 and FTSE 100 indices as well as the largest companies in Australia, Japan and South Africa.

Water is also incorporated into CDP’s supply chain program. In this initiative, large multinational companies (our Supply Chain Members) issue CDP’s water questionnaire to a number of their suppliers. This exercise allows companies to investigate the water risk in their supply chain and gather vital information about water use outside their direct operations.

This year, we have invited approximately 2,300 companies to respond to CDP’s water questionnaire through our investor and supply chain initiatives. This data set excludes private responders.

The dataset contains 2021 data on cities' adaptation plans, reported by cities through the CDP-ICLEI Unified Reporting System in response to question 3.2a ("Please provide more information on your plan that addresses climate change adaptation and/or resilience and attach the document.") in the 2021 Cities questionnaire. This CDP dataset includes over 200 commitments disclosed by state, regional and provincial governments that have joined the Compact of States and Regions. These include emissions reduction targets, energy efficiency targets and renewable energy targets that apply to their government operations or are region-wide.

The 2023 Cities Energy Mix dataset contains data on the energy mix of electricity, heating and cooling, self-reported by cities and local governments in 2023. Grid policy is often set at state or utility level and local governments may not have direct control over their energy mix. The dataset also identifies cities with a renewable energy target. The data is drawn from questions 3.1a, 3.1b, 6.1 and 0.1 in the Cities 2023 questionnaire.
